How to Choose the Right Instrument for You or Your Child

Choosing an instrument is one of the most exciting parts of starting your musical journey. But with so many options available, it can also be difficult to know where to begin.

At Capital Art Music in Macomb, Illinois, we work with children, teens, and adults at different experience levels. One of the first things we help new students determine is which instrument fits their personality, musical interests, and goals.

Guitar

Guitar is an excellent choice for students who enjoy rock, blues, pop, country, jazz, or singer-songwriter music.

Students can begin by learning basic chords and songs before progressing into scales, improvisation, lead guitar, music theory, and more advanced techniques.

Because guitar can be used both as a solo and accompaniment instrument, it offers plenty of flexibility.

Bass

Bass is perfect for students who enjoy rhythm and want to understand how a band works together.

Bass players create the connection between rhythm and harmony. Students develop timing, groove, listening skills, and an understanding of song structure.

It can be especially rewarding for students interested in playing in bands or ensembles.

Ukulele

Ukulele is approachable, portable, and fun.

Its smaller size and softer strings can make it particularly comfortable for younger beginners, although adults enjoy learning it as well.

Students can begin playing recognizable songs relatively quickly, which can help build confidence early in the learning process.

Drums

For students who naturally tap along with songs and enjoy rhythm, drums may be the perfect fit.

Drum lessons develop coordination, timing, concentration, and listening skills while allowing students to physically engage with music.

Piano and Keys

Piano provides one of the clearest ways to understand melody, harmony, chords, and music theory.

It is an excellent foundation for beginners and can also benefit musicians who eventually want to compose, arrange, produce, or learn additional instruments.

Still Not Sure?

You don't have to make the decision alone.

A good music teacher can help determine which instrument fits the student's age, interests, learning style, and goals.

At Capital Art Music, lessons are personalized rather than based on a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

We offer instruction in:

Guitar • Bass • Ukulele • Drums • Piano / Keys • Music Theory and More

Lessons are available in person in Macomb and online.
